This is my first fitness post and I am very excited about it! On Saturday (6/23/12) I participated in the St. Louis Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. If you are unfamiliar with the Susan G. Komen organization, it raises money for breast cancer research and is the largest breast cancer organization in
the world. The main fundraising comes from the Race for the Cure, which are held not only in the U.S., but also various places around the world. It was very important for me to participate in this race because a few months ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. So let’s get into my experience…
My best friend, Nicole, and I signed up to do the 5K (about 3 miles) fun run/walk. There were 50,000+ people at this event and the atmosphere was incredible. And the scene was not too bad either. Every time we got to a hill you could just see the mass of people walking together for one cause (see photo below). To say the least, it was pretty powerful. The 3 miles was not bad at all and it took us a little under two hours to finish because of the amount of people.
After getting done with the race I felt amazing. I was proud of doing something for my mom, but also something healthy. I plan to do the race again next year and my mom wants to join as well. She told me she would like to run it and so would I (Nicole is planning on running next year also). So the goal for both my mom and me is to get in shape for next year.
Doing a race is not the only way you can give towards breast cancer research. Breast cancer awareness month is not until October and a lot of beauty companies put out products that have percentages of the profit go towards breast cancer. For example, every year Essie puts out a new pink nail polish benefiting breast cancer. I managed to pick this up last years shade in Raise Awareness.
I even painted my nails pink especially for the race:
If you get the chance I recommend anyone to participate in a race, no matter what the cause because you feel so great after doing it. And specifically if the Race for the Cure interests you, all the places one is held including dates can be found here.
